Your talking about DSL connections that use phone lines right? I heard that
DSL connections were more secure than cable connections, and I'm sure (but I
haven't tried to use a router with a DSL connection) a person can use a
router with their DSL connection. Also on another post (Re: Third party
firewall or Microsoft firewall) I just wanted to add the following reply

Not all routers have firewalls, although most of the better ones will.
A router firewall will only protect you from external attacks, and will
assume that any out-going information is authorized by the computer user(s).
