Attachment access removed

I've recently downloaded the latest XP updates and since
then have had trouble opening attachments. This I have
realised is due to a new security patch which stops
attacments opening automatically. To get around the
problem I simply selected forward and within the new
e-mail the attachment is now accesable. I have only tried
it with a PDF file, will it work with all files and can
security be breached somehow this way?
