I wouldn't mind if you could document the fix here. I had a stubborn
700mb avi that survived several reboots after an unsuccessful attempt to
re-encode it to mpg. Deleting didn't work even in safe mode.

I finally managed to delete it after a bit of head-scratching. What I did
was disable the page file, cleaning out the prefetch folder and reboot -
must have been portions of the file locked/loaded into memory, I assume.

Mine was a bit of a long-winded solution, so perhaps the other ways you
know of are quicker/easier?
