The vast majority of people have no issues.
Both of mine went perfectly.
People talk a lot when it goes bad but are often usually silent when
all is well.
When you are ready, download the Network Installation to your Desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/
Create a Restore Point, reboot the computer, disable antivirus and any
other unnecessary applications.
Double click SP1 and follow the prompts (may take a while).
Reboot the computer and defrag.
SP1 incorporates all previous updates as well as allows continued
access to newer critical updates.
