lsass.exe system lockout!

My PC boots to a point, but before the desktop is displayed, on a black
screen I get the message: -

'When trying to update a password this return status indicates that the
value provided as the current password is not correct'.

'System Error : lsass.exe'.

On another forum I was told that the only way around this is a reformat and
reinstallation of XP, which for obvious reasons I do not want to do!

I can't even start up in safe mode for receiving the same error message.

However using my product recovery CD and trying a system repair, I get the
prompt: -

'Enter Administrator password', (which I thought was myself or is that local
administrator) but on entering
my password, get: -

'The password is not valid. Please retype password'.

I am the main user on my PC, but I also have a guest account. I have only
created one password and that is for my account (which I thought was the
administrator / local administrator).

I have done a lot of crawling through the MS knowledge base and found a lot
of relevant but ultimately non-working results.

I thought I'd come across a solution when I found a hot fix for 'The
password is not valid. Please retype password' even if to your knowledge you
are typing the correct password. This is downloaded as an inclusion to MS XP
set up floppies. But to my dismay, on reboot got the same 'lsass.exe' error
and the continual reboot loop.

I have even tried 'Passware Recovery Key Software' which supposedly has a
100% effectiveness to try and reset the administrator password, but on
reboot still get the 'lsass.exe' system error. Fortunately they refund if
their software does not work (100% effectiveness ?).

Can anybody please suggest something that I may not have tried as this
problem has existed for four days now and I'm getting desperate (hence the
Passware Key Software attempt).
I feel I've exhausted all research on the subject so maybe a MS expert can
shed some light? Please?

Thanks.
Graham C.
