I do realize that its not a typical network arrangement, but this
experimentation is to set up a 'walk up' (low-security, but the priority is
on even lower login hassle) edge network where people we know but don't
'manage' with a WinXP laptop in the common default config (belongs to
'workgroup', pushbutton login with or without a password), can plug in and:
a) get DHCP access to the internet without any intervention or reconfig
b) be given the 'acmeuser' loging info to hit a few public shares on server1
c) get access to a few private shares on server1 with the 'acmeboss' login
if they know it.
a and b are no problem of course. My main issue is that once a user puts in
the login info for a username and password, and if they click 'save
password' then the server (they usually do) then the '\\server1\secure
folder' share won't challenge them for a different (acmeboss) login, it just
says no, because its trying the 'acmeuser' info
Having server1 be a domain controller was a mistake, I was thinking of
offering an exchange server on server2 for these types of users, strictly
for public folder kind of apps, but that's out, too much hassle for too
little benefit. So, I'll demote server1 to 'workgroup' and ditch server2,
but I can't do that right away.
Thanks for the advice, I'll see what parts of it I can integrate into my
present constraints. If this post clarified the issues, I'd be happy to hear
any further tips.
