| Change his password, logon to his account and then browse through his
| TIF cache. If you don't find much porno there, then your son is likely
| the innocent victim of porno spam. Search google under "web bugs" to
| find out how HTML email can cause your son to accidentally alert
| spammers of the existence of his email account. Note that XP SP1 will
| have a new switch in Outlook Express that will stop these web bugs from
| disclosing the existence of your email messages. It is called the "read
| all messages in plain text" option. Use it.
|
| Note that the existence of some porno HTML in his web cache is no
| evidence of his active searching for porno. It is entirely possible to
| stumble across a porno web site and then have great difficulty "getting
| away" from it, due to HTML and script tricks that web sites play on your
| browser. Also note that instant messaging applications can attract porno
| messages which may end up in the cache.
|
| If your son has little or no porno on his accounts, then advise him of
| his new password and the reason for your logging on to his account.
| Advise him that you are there to help if he has trouble with porno spam
| (message rules can get rid of it) and tell him about how HTML messages
| can tip off spammers about his email address. Your son will realize he
| can't hide porno on his computer, but he will also understand that you
| have a reasonable attitude about it. Porno is like dog dung. When you go
| for a walk in the park, you sometimes get some on your shoe but that
| doesn't mean you like it there.
|
| Also note that there is a difference between porno and "pictures of
| naked people". Your son has a natural curiosity about naked people and a
| natural disgust with "pornography" and the act of sexual intercourse.
| Use your influence to make sure that his natural aversion to pornography
| is maintained and that his curiosity about human anatomy and sexual
| intercourse is also satisfied. Remember, it's not a question of "if" but
| "when". There is a lot of good sexual information on the Internet, as
| well as a lot of pornography and pictures of naked people doing what
| comes naturally.
