New local user with domain user's home

I have been logging into my XP Pro box by signing into my
school's domain using my network username and password.
The problem I'm finding now is that I am home and there
is no school network to authenticate me, so I cannot
logon using my user.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I figured the only
way around this was to set up a local user and set this
user to use the same home directory (in C:\Documents and
Settings) as the directory that was set up for me when I
log onto the domain. I am having trouble finding how to
do this though.

I found the places to set the home directory and profile
for a local user but I am unsure what this does. I tried
setting them both to C:\Documents and
Settings\userName.domainName (the path where all of my
settings, files, "My Documents", etc. are). When I tried
to log on with the local user I got an error about part
of the profile being encrypted and the key being
encrypted as well. So I deleted the path from the
profile path setting and logged on and didn't see any of
the settings that I had before.

Also, both times it created a folder in C:\Documents and
Settings for my new local user. Is it possible to just
use the folder I had set up for my non-local user so I
have all of my preferences and any changes I make will be
saved when I go back to school?

Thanks in advance for any help!
