Greetings --
From what site did you download this "patch?" Blizzard, Battle.Net, or
some 3rd party hack site? I wager it was the latter, as my two WinXP PCs
have had no problems after downloading the one authorized WC3 patch from
Blizzard and Battle.Net. It sounds like you downloaded some sort of
malicious code that isn't really WinXP-compatible. It may have been a
virus, or some sort of spyware. Anyway, a virus cannot cause physical
damage to a hard drive, so your friend's problem isn't quite the same.
As for your specific issue, it sound like a format and reinstallation
may be your best bet. Before that, however, if you can get into Windows
again, try to turn off the automatic reboot (Right-click My Computer >
Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery/Settings > Uncheck System
Failure/Automatically restart). This will allow you to see the specific
error message on the next BSOD, which may give someone a clue as to a repair
action.
