If no account has the P (permission to change permission)
granted to it when you apply new permissions you will get
a message warning you. If you have none of the OS on the
drive, it is safe to set its permissions and ownership to
whatever you wish. You likely need to first take ownership
in order to do this, given what you report it now does.
