Jon,

With Home you can also adjust permissions by
rebooting into Safe mode (F8). Actually, once
used to it cacls is more convenient since you do
not have to reboot/change/reboot/try etc. but can
instead login/change/switch-or-runas to test, etc.

Some apps will want to write to more than just
their install directory area, and others will want
to make changes in the registry. For an app that
resists the change you have already made to the
install area, try downloading regmon and filemon
from www.sysinternals.com and using them to
locate what accesses are being tried that fail.
