After many hours of experimentation on the three computers I made an
important discovery. Computers that were orginally formatted NTFS displayed
this problem but those that were originally formatted FAT32 -- and
subsequently converted to NTFS by PartitionMagic-- did not have any problem.
Also, computers still formatted in FAT32 did not have the problem. I do not
have enough knowledge about why this is happening. I "fixed" the problem on
my home machine by converting it to FAT32 and then back to NTFS. Voila,
problem solved.
