I agree with Roger's suggestion however I am not sure it will work as I
believe the tool is designed for moving users from 9x or 2000 systems to XP,
not necessarily from local to domain. It is worth a try.
The reason you are able to access them with admin rights has to do with FS
security which has to be changed from the local user account to the domain
user account.
When you look at the location of the original users profile you will find it
inside a folder with a very long alphanumeric folder name enclosed by {}.
This is the same as the users security identifier, this folder access is
limited to admins and the user account, since the user no longer logging on
as the user that created the folder they no longer have access. (Security
identifiers changed when you created the domain accounts). Once you copy
the profile over, the rights to the folder are still allowing local\user to
access the message store. But because of NTFS security domain\rob will not
have access unless it is granted somewhere/somehow.
The easiest way to fix this, which is going to be tedious at best, will be
to log in as local administrator. R click My
computer>Properties>Advanced>Settings under User Profiles.
There you will see a list of all user profiles on the system. Some of them
will be preceded by the computer name localsystem\user, and some by domain
name domain\user. Select the old local user profile, Click Change under
"permitted to use" and enter or browse for the user you wish to allow
access, which will probably be the same person's domain account. Click
browse under "copy profile to" and navigate to the location of the same
users domain profile, Docs and Settings\domain.user\..... and select ok.
Repeat for each account on the machine.
You will be unable to copy an account that is in use and you cannot copy the
profiles unless you are logged in with admin rights.
This will copy the old local\user settings to the new domain\user settings
and should allow access as you desire without granting admin rights to the
domain user.
