I am trying to learn how to use the ASR feature of WinXP
Pro. Specifically, I would like to routinely back up my
system onto a second internal hard drive in my PC. In the
case the the first hard drive fails, I can use the second
drive to restore it.

I've unsuccessfully tried two different recoveries. My
machine has the master drive with C: (2GB), D: (2GB), and
E:(36GB) partitions. The system is in the c:\winnt
directory. The second drive is mounted to a subdirectory
of the E: drive.

For the test I created an ASR backup (which appears to be
the whole C: partition along with a floppy). I then
booted from the install CD-ROM and selected F2 ASR and
fed in the floppy. The system recovered to the point it
wanted the backup file. But, it was unable to see the
second hard drive. No dice.

So, I tried a vanilla XP install on the new drive. Then,
I attempted to recover from the backup file (which I
could now see). However, the XP install had defaulted to
the c:\windows directory and the restore was pointing the
system to c:\winnt and the partition ran out of space.

Would the recovery have worked if:
    1) the second partition was mounted on a drive
letter? or
    2) I had sized the new C: partition larger?

Is there any way that a CD-ROM console boot could be used
to recover the system from the image on the second disk?

Thanks,
