The hotix provided for "Damaged Registry Repair and
Recovery in Windows XP (Q318159)" fixed the problem. See:

I should have checked my bookmarks sooner. I had
bookmarked a few of the sites created by MVPs and such and
found that KB article listed in:

http://www.aumha.org/kbreg.htm

And voila! I'm back. I seemed to have lost the "Power
Users" group for the user but that was easy to add back.
If that is the only thing lost then the fix was an
excellent fix. I hope they are able to integrate the fix
into Windows XP; it probably should be.
