I replied to this about 12 hours ago using the "Web-based
reader" but I do not see my reply using the "Web-based
reader".

I am sorry that I was not more clear. The problem is just
with one user. I am not sure if there is a NTUser.dat for
the system but since there is one in each user's profile I
assumed it implied a problem with the user.

I have determined that it is highly likely that the
NTUser.dat file is corrupt. Someone found a KB article
describing what to do when a user profile is corrupt. The
fix involved creating a new user and then copying the
profile to the new user. That does not fix the problem;
the new user then gets a corrupt profile. When I deleted
the NTUser.dat file from the new user then XP does not
complain about a corrupt profile.

I realize that it is unlikly the NTUser.dat file can be
repaired or the data recovered but I wanted to ask in case
anything can be done.
