It sounds as if you have found one of the ways to do this.
When an account's membership does not fit one of the few
pre-defined patterns is just displays that it is different by
using the unknown label you see.
Go into the interface again and see what accounts are in
the Administrators, Power Users, Users groups. You will
likely see the account you changed in the groups you expect.
BTW, in the user/group picker you get when you are adding
a user to a group, click on the Advanced ... at the bottom,
and then on Find Now in order to get the full list from which
to choose instead of typing it in.
