Why not boot into Safe Mode and Uninstall XP Pro. Once
your back in XP Home, activate it. At that point, you
will know that XP HOme has been activated.

Of course, there are other ways to uninstall XP such as
going into a command prompt.

As your were trying to upgrade to XP Pro, clearly there
were signs that you were having problems upgrading. That
should of been a sign for you to stop and uninstall XP
Pro.

I dont see how Microsoft can be responsible for this. IT
was the lack of research or info you had done on your
part. I am not here to put you down, just I think
outload. :)
