This does sound like a virus, and a rather common one at that.

But of course you do have up-to-date anti-virus software installed and
running, right? Because you wouldn't want to risk all your data, and
risk infecting all your friends, in this day & age ... knowing how often
news reports in the last year have pointed out how rampant viruses have
become and how many people are infected?

After all, you wouldn't leave the keys in your car and the doors
unlocked when you park it on the streets of the city, right? You have
more sense than to do the equivalent with your computer, I'm sure, so
maybe this one just slipped in before you had a chance to update your
anti-virus definitions most recently ... in which case, get the latest
defs from the vendor's website for whatever AV software we know you MUST
be using, and re-scan your system.

And from the zillions of people who got the "I love you" virus and
others, you did learn to not open attachments from email even if they
appear to be from your friends or are otherwise "interesting", right?
