After being duly chastized and humbled, I shall try this
explanation again.
I run Windows Xp Pro on one computer that is shared by 3
other users. Accounts are 1 administrator and 3 power
users.
There is a directory on 'D' drive named "DUMP." Users
copy jpeg files from a CDROM that contains copies of
jpegs burned from another computer. These jpegs are then
edoted in Adobe and filed into a resource directory for
use by a database.
Immediately after copying to the files to the "DUMP"
directory, all file attributes from newly copied files
are "Read Only" per File Properties window. The
attributes of the files are then changed by removing the
check mark from "Read Only."
If SOME jpeg files are edited in Adobe and then re-saved
inconsistent events occur. One power user can over-write
the old version and successfully and save the new edited
of the file. But the administrator and other users cannot
do the same procedure and always successfully save an
edited version of a file in the DUMP directory.
About 75% of the DUMP folder files DO NOT exhibit the
problem and they can be over-written as normally would
occur.
"File Properties show that "NONE of the individual files
in the DUMP directory are tagged with "Read Only"
attributes even though I cannot save the new edited
version over them.
Error message reports that access to the file to be
overwritten is denied because the file is locked or is in
use by another process - even though no other programs
are open. Once in awhile the error message will refer me
to file manager to change attributes - even though the
attributes are not "Read Only.".
What is going on. From what I gather from the other users
they each copy files from the CDROM to the DUMP directory
as described above. Though they are in the same group
(power user) is there some security setting that is
causing this to happen with files copied by a user other
than the one whi initially input the file. I thought that
an administrator account could do anything but even this
account encounters the problem with the same 25% of the
files.
