Re: Backup files with Windows defender or Norton??

Hi,

I too have just started looking at all this backing up business and
have a question related to 'which file backup facility to use' and in
answer to the poster above - in my opinion it's only worth backing your
FILES up with one facility - no point doing it twice with two different
ones.

I am now (as of very recently) protecting myself in three ways.

1. System Restore - this was already happening automatically to allow
me to roll back my system state - nothing I had to do here

2. Disc Image backup - unfortunatly I only have Vista Home Premium so
no native disk image backup facility. I did find an app on the interweb
called Macrium Reflect - the free version of this allows disc image
backup, which looks good to me, and if I buy for 30 Euros, it allows
incremental disc image backup AND file backup. Anyone else heard of
this? - think it's a good option?

3. File backup
Now I have three options - and my question is:

Which one should I use AND WHICH TAKES THE LEAST STORAGE SPACE?

See my experiences so far below.

i. Use Vista backup and restore: I am trying this out now - I told it
to backup everything (ticked all options) once a week.
The first backup took 22GB (I had about 40GB of stuff (mainly photos)
that I knew of so it's obviously compressing data which is good).
The second backup (the week after) then took a further 15GB! That
surprised me since I was hoping it would only backup changes to my files
and I am positive I haven't changed 15GB worth of files in a week!

ii. Use Norton 360 file backup: Does this do any better on space? -
haven't tried this yet ...

iii. Seriously considering buying the full version of Macrium Reflect
mensioned above - this would allow incremental backup of disc images,
and file backup - again - anyone tried this? Any good?

I'll probably get around to trying out all these options and will post
my opinions here if anyone is interested ...
