Any MS security options for single server 2008 x64 as notebook OS?

Hi, and thanks for reading this question. Can anyone offer some options at a
low price point for this setup?

Server 2008 x64 has been a real pleasure to run, and I find it far more
stable than Vista x64. I hope to run it as as a testbed workstation / client
OS, but I am fairly puzzled by the security software options available from
Microsoft. At the moment, is it true that Forefront Client Security is the
only MS option for a single x64 server? (I'm on an out-of-pocket budget and
am working with this Server as the basis for my own admin 101 edumacation, so
I can't say, beyond the TechNet license, I have much money to throw around
for 3rd party server security suites, let alone bigger server boxes.)

Maybe I'm demanding too much, but when I read the system requirements for
FCS, I nearly choked on my lunch. Server 2008 is a real sprinter on a
dual-core Santa Rosa notebook (2.2GHz x2, 3GB RAM), but my understanding is
that Forefront Client Security doesn't like to date anyone with less than
dual-core 2.6GHz+ and 4GB RAM+. I guess that's not even including the extra
load the system has to carry of SQL Server Standard Edition, correct?

Oh, incidentally, my university only furnishes x86 OS antivirus support.

Seems like MS is going to push me back to Vista x64. That's a real shame.

I can't tell you how helpful it would be to get some input that led to some
realistic security options, either from MS or competitors.

There's a parallel config issue here: In terms of a "network," this OS will
run nothing more than local file storage/backup, occasional local
peer-to-peer transfers, and a small website down the line. It's essentially
just in client/workstation role, VPNing into an academic network. As I read
through the new Server 2008 Security Guide beta, what capabilities would YOU
completely lock down, and are there *any* config settings I can afford to
loosen up for performance's sake for now?

Tall order, but thanks again for helping out with your professional advice.

a.k.a.
