Re: Use of NetBIOS vs FQDN

What are you logging on to, when you log on from a workstation?
Depending upon your configuration, the workstation may see a server
entered by NetBIOS name as in local Intranet security zone, and a
server entered by FQDN as being in the Internet zone. This difference
would affect the security on a server share, for instance.

I always assumed that the shorter name goes back to an older version of Microsoft that may not have allowed longer domain names. ...
