Linking PKI directory accounts with Active Directory?

A few years ago I was looking into a solution for a customer where they
wanted to use their PKI infrastructure with biometric devices and access
cards, and map it to Active Directory accounts for Windows login. At the
time it would have been a very tedious process to map these accounts across
the enterprise. Is there something better available today to automatically
manage the link between the PKI LDAP accounts and the Active Directory user
accounts?
