Try updating the update software.
See:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836974/en-us
In the event logs, the only notice I
get is an error about WMI attempting to start only to find it's
already started (wmi is set to restart the service if it stops)
Check task manager and stop WMI if it is running, then try updating.

I have never seen, or heard of this before so I'm looking for some
assistance.
When we start the Automatic Updates service, within 5-10 mins the
following services all stop:
server
computer browser
task scheduler
cryptography
virtual disk manager
They will all start back up as long as we don't start the automatic
updates service.
Windows 2003 server SP1 integrated (fm MS, not done on site)
in a domain and the policy is telling it to run AU from our WSUS on
site. The WSUS is running on about 30 other servers without issue,
except for 3 which are all giving us almost the same indication as
above (some other services stop on the other boxes)
I can't find anything in common. In the event logs, the only notice I
get is an error about WMI attempting to start only to find it's
already started (wmi is set to restart the service if it stops)
The following software was installed:
Adobe 6
winzip 9
admin pak
support pak
resource kit
DumpACL
port reporter
(same as the rest of the servers)
I'm open to just about any suggestion except rebuilding (not
authorized to do so yet). I've tried removing it from the domain and
rejoining (same problem). Virus scans turn up nothing (norton and
mcafee)
