I used to use a low end router but now use a Netscreen 5XP that I bought
used on Ebay for under $100. There are a lot of differences particularly
when it comes to advanced logging, more flexible firewall rules, VPN
endpoint that can use certificate authentication, content filtering, and
the ability to have a firewall that can have a default block all outbound
rule and then you create rules for the authorized exceptions for example.
Having said that I can understand the your concern in spending $3000. You
can get advanced firewall protection for a lot less depending on your needs
and the size of your network. For instance the Sonicwall TZ170 goes for a
fraction of that price and can also integrate with content filtering
services and virus scanning subscriptions for reasonable prices. A lot of
small business rely on a simple internet router but the extra investment in
something like a Sonicwall may be well worth the money if you want the

a $70 D-Link router that comes with everything?

I don't see the different in term of functionality. In a matter of fact,
the $70 D-Link comes with a whole lot more than any of the "Security
Appliance".

Those companies who sell security appliance wants to charge me this and
that in additional to the basic for hundreds of dollars per user etc.
