Thanks.

I think you are to the point where you need to enlist the help of those
that administer that server and/or any firewalls routers in the path
between the two explaining to them what your results are. It may take the
use of something like netmon on each end next time to try and see what is
going on with the packet exchange sequence between the two servers and if
the designation server is ever seeing any of that traffic or not. ---

Thanks - at the time of the issue I could ping but not telnet. I could
telnet on 25 to other systems and other systems could telnet to the
server I could not.
Netdiags comes off fine.
Event viewer shows no issues.

Intermittent network problems can be tough to track down but using ping
is a good start to establish basic connectivity. I would suggest that
you ping by IP address and the fully qualified domain name of the server
you are having problems with as in mailserver2.mydomain.com as DNS
problems can cause network connectivity problems and try to telent by IP
also if you were using the server's name. I would also run the support
tool netdiag on your server to look for any related problems if
errors/warning are found. If you find that you can consistently ping the
remote server by IP address but can not telnet into port 25 by IP
address I would suspect some sort of IP traffic filtering though offhand
I don't know why it would exist at some times and not others and would
certainly contact those that manage the remote server explaining your
results. They may have some helpful information. As always be sure to
use Event Viewer to check your application/system/security logs for any
error/warning messages that may provide clues as to what is going on.
If you use an ipsec policy between the servers that could be another
cause of connectivity problems if the SA fails and that may be recorded
in the application log. You can use the mmc snapins for IP security to
check for ipsec configuration and if it is enabled. --- Steve

Hello,
I'm trying to track down an intermittent traffic issue. My e-mail
server (Server A) at a public addess xxx.xxx.20.xxx has problems
communicating with another e-mail server with company but at a
different location xxx.xxx.40.xxx . It communicates no problem
normally and when the communication issue occurs both server a and b
have no problem communicating with any other servers. I don't have
access to serverb as they are governed by a different group.
Last night when the issue occurred I was abled to telnet to other
exchange servers within and outside the organization but I was not able
to telnet to server b from server A.
I don't have control over the cisco firewall but I want to exhaust all
the issues that might be part of Windows. Can you think of anything
within windows 2003 SP1 that might cause intermittent communication
issues of this type.
PS I was able to ping the device by name at the time I wasn't able to
telnet to it on port 25. This morning communication is working fine
and I made no changes.
