you would need an intrusion detection system. Also, there are many kinds of
DoS attacks that can be done against even well patched systems.
They can be either anonymous comming from the internet (or some infected
internal computers) - so this type can be prevented on edge firewalls with
IDS capabilities and with proper antivir/antispyware/antimalware software on
clients.
Other DoS attacks would require authenticated user mounting the attack, the
account use would be logged and so detectable. Probably this would come from
infected client machines that can be protected by the antivir/antimalware
solutions if your whole network is of trusted/responsible users. Otherwise,
you will need a host based IDS on all machines under your administrative
control.
