In a workgroup you need to have the user account logon/password in each Windows 2000
and Windows 2003 computer that you want to access shares on that computer that
matches the user logon/password of the user logged onto the computer trying to access
the share unless you enable the guest account which is not recommended unless all
users are 100 percent trusted and the computer has a properly configured firewall to
protect the network from the internet.
Other things to check for starts are that the built in ICF firewall is disabled on
the W2003 server assuming another firewall is protecting it from the internet and
that it is on the same network as the other computers that you should verify by using
ping with computer name and IP address as shown by Ipconfig /all. On a typical class
C network the first three octets of the IP address for each computer should be the
same as in 192.168.0.xxx with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Also running nbtstat -n
on the Windows 2003 computer should show at least three entries as registered names
[ with <00> and <20> for computer name] showing that the workstation and server
services are running and netbios over tcp/ip is enabled. --- Steve
