    Hardly that's a matter of software version compatibility but rather is a
    configuration problem.

    I'm not very familiar with the Novell SuSE product, but few things come to
    mind:

    * Check the logs for any trails of the failed login
    * Go to runlevel 3 (as the root, run "init 3") and try to login, see if that
    works and logs are any different - that step will rule out problems with the
    X login manager and xok group

    Inclusion of the PAM configuration for login would help. Please find some
    additional info about distributed CIFS authentication at
