I'll apologize in advance for posting in multiple groups; I'm not sure which
one is best.
I have a box running Windows 2003 Server, with 1 NIC. The box is NOT
running AD; it's a member of a workgroup. It's also behind a Netgear
router. The server is a dev server, and I want to be able to VPN into it,
and that's as far as I need to get. I don't need/want access to any other
resources on the local LAN.
I installed RRAS last night and after quite a bit of fussing, was finally
able to get a remote client connected via VPN. I had to use a custom config
of RRAS in order to get it setup because I only have 1 NIC.
I have several questions on the setup of RRAS. First of all, I have no
problem admitting I'm a complete rookie in this area, although I'm very
technical. Before I begin with my list of questions, I should tell you that
something happened this morning around 9:30 and I haven't been able to VPN
to the box after that time. The only thing that happened at that time is
that a few other boxes on the local LAN were fired up. My first suspicion
is that there weren't enough IP's to handle all the boxes. I don't think
that's the case because there are 5 boxes on the network and the Netgear
router is configured for 32 IPs.
And now for my questions:
- is RRAS setup a lot easier if my box had 2 NICs? Since I had to do a
custom setup, did I miss a lot of "help" with the wizards.
- are there step-by-step instructions on how to configure RRAS with 1
NIC, and on a box that isn't a member of AD (workgroup only) somewhere out
there?
- when I got connected last night, I was able to map a drive to the
server just fine. However, I couldn't connect to SQL, which is also running
on the RRAS box. Any ideas why? I tried by name, IP, I setup a SQL client
alias. Nothing worked. And SQL is my forte! :)
- does anyone have any insight as to why I wouldn't be able to connect
to the VPN server any more? Could the other boxes coming on the network
have affected my VPN server somehow?
Any insight for a frustrated, tired RRAS newbie would be much appreciated!
:)
Thanks, Andre
