Hello Bill,
Also you can change this settings/files with a BartPe disk or Knoppix. Did it very often and helps always without reinstalling.

I cannot boot my Windows XP home edition. Got this message: Windows
XP cannot start because the following file is missing or
corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system. When I use the windows
startup disk and enter the recovery console, I am stopped by a request
for the administrator's password. I have read the other postings re
this being the builtin password and I saw the postings for the
software to help defeat a missing password problem. Since the
computer will not boot I cannot go into SafeMode. Without the startup
disk the computer just cycles on and off with a flash of a screen with
writing but I cannot read that fast.
Any thoughts on how to proceed, short of reinstalling Windows, would
be very welcome.
