My son;s friend setup a domain name = to the machine name on my son's

because even in safe mode the process is the same. What options do I have???

You can still login to the local computer by by selecting it from the
dropdown menu. You will see a place for username and password but
there is also a dropdown for local computer or domain. You will need
to select local computer and then you can access the computer like you
did before. If you are planning on not using the computer on the
domain again you may want to remove the computer from the domain. If
you have questions feel free to email me. matt dot halvorson @ gmail
dot com sorry for the weird way to type in the email address but I
don't want somone's bot finding my email address on this.
