security update repeats "indefinitely"

I recently upgraded my computer from Win98 to Win2K. Afterwards, Win2K and Win98 were on the same partition. I installed Service Pack 4, then all other security updates, then IE 6 SP1.
Now I have this problem: Windows keeps telling me that there is one security update ready to install:
"Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components (KB832483)"
When I click on the update icon in the task bar and click to install it, I get the message that the update was installed successfully. However, a couple of minutes later, the same update message pops up again in the task bar. Repeating the installation doesn't help - it always keeps popping up.
Any idea what causes this and how I can get rid of the problem? How do I know if the update is installed or not?
Thanks,
Martin
