This is a workaround attempt only
That KB is for security patch ms05-018 (which is fairly old)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890859
You could go to the bulletin and follow the links for your
XP Home to download and while logged in with admin
account install the patch manually.

If this does not work the two things you might try are
- posting in the Windows update newsgroup
- calling MS using the PC Safety helpline

Just wiped and reloaded my XP Home machine.
Autoupdates are on and 99.9% went through OK.
I have one update though that keeps downloading and updating time and time
again. If I install it, it sais " install done" and then 10 seconds later
I
get a tray Icon telling me I have downloads to install. The very same one
I
just downloaded.
Initializing installation... done!
Installing Security Update for Windows XP (KB890859) (update 1 of 1)...
Any way to stop this happening but still keep my Autoupdate option live?
