I manually uninstalled Antispyware (I read somewhere that Defender's
automatic uninstall of Antispyware resulted in problems in some cases).
Then
I followed your advice (and KB915087 description) and voila!
Defender installed and running smoothly! :)
Thank you very much Steve for your time and effort to help me !!

Many thanks Steve - I'll try it and will let you know.
Thanks a lot ! (I'm stupid - should have thought of googling the Error
No.! )

I did a search of Google and found the exact error message that you
describe
and proposed solution in a Microsoft KB article as shown below though
it
indicates this is a problem with non English version of the operating
system. It may also help to use Event Viewer to look in the logs to
see
if
any pertinent messages have been recorded as warnings/errors that may
be
helpful. --- Steve

Installation started fine, uninstalled Antispyware Beta 1, then
halted
with
an Error
1609: "Users is not a valid user or group."
Mystery: there are no users - I'm a single user on a single PC. My
W2k
is
valid (MS's own validification process always accepts it), I have a
Passport
account (I thought I'm a valid user with these) and of course I'm
not a
group.
Besides, it is nowhere mentioned that such conditions of Defender
installation exist.
I use W2KProSP4, IE6SP1 (both with all the patches MS regularly
issues)
and
naturally have administrator rights on my single PC.
No idea, how can I install Defender :((
