Here's an update. After uninstalling that hotfix both users were able to get
through the day without a reboot, however the next day they began again. An
analysis of the mini dump showed the same error and at that point I was
stumped, until I had to slap myself for being so shortsighted... we use SUS
and after looking at the installed updates I found that kb840987 had been
re-installed!!!! duh.

Anyway, to make a long post short, I uninstalled the two stations again and
also unapproved that hotfix for all Windows 2000 stations. I'll post an
update next week to let you know what happened.
