XP has a built in ICF firewall that could have been used to protect the
computer. There are so many worm/viruses out there that it is very hard to say
what the problem is but it sounds as if it still is infected if it is pinging
other computers. The best solution is a format of the hard drive and reinstall
of the operating system after backing up any data including the user profile
under documents and settings, though it seems people only consider that after
the computer is almost unuseable You might also try the free Stinger tool from
McAfee in the link below which will try to detect and remove many of the current
viruses going around. Any computer on any network should also have a virus scan
program installed that scans all emails and ideally can keep itself current with
virus definitions along with a firewall and keeping current with critical
updates. --- Steve
