Step 1 - Get a firewall (http://www.zonelabs.com or http://www.sygate.com are
a couple of companies that provide free firewalls. There are plenty more
around.)

Step 2 - Disable the messenger service.
Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK
