Messenger Pop-ups

every I loaded Windows 2000 I keep getting these
irratating pop-ups from something called messenger. i have
messages from all different things just like regular pop-
ups including ones telling me how i can buy something to
keep the pop-ups from popping up. I know there has to be
a way to keep this from happening without purchasing
anything. is this something from the windows program I can
just turn off or what?
HELP?
