Is the router doing NAT? Are the home network IP address public or private?
How are you attempting to remotely connect? PPTP? RDP? Some other VPN? What
OS is running on the home PCs? From what OS are you attempting to connect?
You don't necessarily need to be able to ping to make a remote connection.
