Thanks for posting Rita. It's sad and good to know that
I'm not alone in seeing this. I've been seeing it on
several machines at work and at home for weeks now. At
work it sparked a debate as to whether or not the created
admins were functionally different than the built in Admin
accounts. I can see now that what we were seeing was not
a difference in accounts, but evil lurking in our systems.
All of the machines I use and support have/get the latest
antivirus defs, svcpks, fixes etc., along with security
policies in place. I'm vigilant about that.
In one case, even though NAV didn't detect it, I ran the
Symantec Welchia worm removal tool and it said it found
it. It removed it and I was then able to get my updates
for Windows and NOrton. One thing I've seen with Welchia
is that it disables Norton from getting updates and
sometimes scanning. So far that particular machine has
been ok. As for home, I guess I'm going to have to
reinstall again. Man, this is insane.
Last night at home I tried to run the MS tool to scan my
system for an XP upgrade. I just wanted to see how it
worked. Well, it didn't at all. Even though I'm
currently using the built in admin account it said I
didn't have permission to run it. LOLOL..cry.cry.Very
scary indeed.
I'd say that this thing could be a true monster if I let
my imagination run with it. There was a critical security
patch issued today which thwarts attackers from taking
over control of the machine. Maybe that's it. I sure
hope so.
It seems like any company that doesn't have a dedicated
security person in place had better consider getting one.
I suggested it to my boss yesterday. I'm overwhelmed at
work with just the regular day to day PC support stuff and
now we're upgrading and dealing with viruses/worms and
strange and unexplainable things everyday. The staff is
freaking and I'm exhausted. It's all I think about day
and night. Look at me still! I'd better get off of here
and go eat.
