Hi Sherry. Unfortuneatley when you have a virus, unpredictable things and
damage to the operating system can occur. You said you had multiple viruses
to boot which really complicates things. The virus removal programs try to
do the best they can, but a format reinstall is the only way to insure a
reliable operating system again. Somewhere along the line, permissions have
been changed on folders, files, user rights, services, registry keys and
registry values may have been changed. There may still may be hard to find
script/batch files with innocent looking names causing reocurring problems.
Here are some things that may be worth a try. Delete all your temporary
internet files and cookies and use disk cleanup to remove as much temporary
files as you can. Make sure you scan your computer with the latest up to
date virus definition files. Try running System File Checker -sfc /scannow
with the install cdrom handy. Also try resetting your security settings
back to default usining the secedit command in the KB link below. You can
just copy and paste the command into the command window on your computer.
Like I said, these things are worth a try, but possibly will not make any
difference as they can not repair everything. Only clean install can do
that. Many viruses will not allow a computer operating system to even start.
At least you can have access to your data, so that you can back it up if you
do a reinstall. --- Steve
