For the past week or so, shortly after opening MS Outlook,
I invariably get a Norton Internet Security message
saying "a remote system is attempting to access Generic
Host Process for Win32 Services on your computer." The
application is identified as C:\WINNT\System32
\svchost.exe. Norton identifies this as low risk, coming
from Microsoft Corporation, and recommends permitting
access. However, almost immediately after clicking OK to
permit this access, I get a Program Error
message: "svchost.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by7 Windows. You will need to restart the
program." This is definitely true, as Outlook is now
rendered inoperable. I can't send messages out, receive
messages, or even move folders. To get back in business,
it is not sufficient to simply close and reopen Outlook.
I have to shut down the computer and reboot. I have now
taken to ignoring the "Win32" messages from Norton, as I
can't afford to shut down every five minutes while trying
to get work done.
Anybody got any idea what's happening, whether I'm at
risk, and what I should do about this?
Thanks,
Colin Jones
