Can't add user permissions from folder window, can from Computer Mgmt console

On a Win2k client on a network with a win2k pdc server,
I'm having the following problem:

When I try to set folder or share permissions directly
from the "My Computer" or a folder window, I get an error
trying to display the domain users. For example:

Open "My Computer"
Right-click on the c-drive icon
Properties...
Click on the Security tab
Click Add...
==> in the listbox where the users are supposed to appear,
i get a gey box instead with the following error message:

"Cannot diaplay objects from this location because of the
following error: One or more parameters are illegal."

(The "look in" dropdown is set to "3rdfloor.local" the
name of the local domain).

HOWEVER, if I use the Computer Management console from
Administrative Tools, click on "Disk Management"
under "Storage", right-click on "c-drive", Properties...,
Security tab, Add...

then the same dialog box comes up, this time with all the
domain users and groups properly displayed!

All other network functionality on the Win2k client seems
to be fine: login works, accessing network drives on the
server and other workstations works, connecting to the
internet works.

Win NT and Win 98 clients on the same network can also
display domain users and groups.

The client is running Win2k sp4 with the following
hotfixes: KB823559, KB823980, Q147222, Q816093.

The server is running Win2k Server sp4 with the following
hotfixes: KB823559, KB823980, Q147222.

Running the netdiag tool on the client and server gives
normal results except for the following warning:

[WARNING] Failed to query SPN registration on
DC 'gurnsey_400.3rdFloor.local'.

Any ideas on how to fix this are greatly appreciated.
