Forgotten logon password

My daughter recently changed the logon password on her
laptop computer and now can't logon. She either has
forgotten what she entered for the new password or typed
it incorrectly when it was reset. She also only has one
logon user account so she can't launch Windows to get to
the control panel to rest the password. Is there any way
short of re-installing the OS to get into the system to
reset the password?
