Yes, you are correct. However, if I'm not mistaken, the file has to have
been saved once at least in order for the autosave to begin its scheduled
saving process. We have a few users who will leave documents open (with
paragraphs of text/data) who have not actually saved it. In this instance,
we need a product that will examine the process, and save the document in
the correct format based on it, with a name that includes the correct
extension, as well as date and time (for uniqueness).

I believe there is a UPS company out there with software like this, but as I
say, we just need the software, not the hardware.
