The setting I changed was in the Users and Passwords in
Control Panel. It's at the top of the window (I haven't
seen it on every machine with Win2K) and is a tick box
saying "Users must enter a name and password to use this
computer". I ticked this on so that I could change the
default log on to Administrator and that's when it all
went wrong.

Anyway, I've now reinstalled W2K and it's all working
again but thank you very much for all of your
suggestions. Just one of those strange Windows problems I
guess...
