No Backup

Hi all
Iam using a USB external drive on a windows xp pro workstation to backup
mapped drives that lead to a 2000 server.
I set the schedules up to happen each night at 7.00pm. Every thing was
working fine for about a week then the schedules just stopped working. No
evidence in event viewer etc. I deleted all the jobs and created new ones
but the schedules will not start.

I then moved the USB device over to a 2000 member server. I set up the
Backup and Schedules. Again they worked for approximately a week then
stopped.
Is their any thing I can do to find out why they are not working.
( I have been using the Backup application that is supplied with the OS)
