I recently had a run in with spyware, you know, the software that stealthily
installs itself on your computer and then starts offering popup ads on just
about every click you make.
What a security hole! I removed several spyware programs, including btlink,
gator, adn savenow, only to have btlink come back three times now. Once it
came back while I was away. Yes, completely away from my computer! I reset
all IE configurations to only allow active-x installs "with prompt". I then
cleaned all these nasty programs from my computer using regsvr32 /u *.dll,
and cleaned the registry, rebooted, removed the files, checked the registry
in \software\microsoft\common files\windows\run to remove anything there
etc. I then rebooted the machine, opened IE, and went to lunch. When I came
back, BTLINK had reinstalled itself on its own.
So How is it that IE has become such a huge security hole? I mean, security
is more than virus protection, its also privacy. Because IE allows this kind
of thing, even when a power user is in the middle of cleaning their system
(kind of like stealing while you're being arrested), my home is no longer
secure. I'm not secure in my "person, papers and things" as the constitution
of the US says. I'm open to thieves who have so easily and openly hijacked
Microsoft technology, and used my multi-thousand dollar high-tech toy
against me, and despite my efforts.
The spyware folks can say that they have "prompted" the user, but I know
better. I've been on a crusade for a week now to rid my computer of these
spyware programs, and adware programs, and they keep coming back DESPITE my
efforts. So where is the security????
Sad, I just had to install Opera because IE is just too unsafe to run.
